Solomon Islands

Quality Management Consultant - Clearance of UXO from Munda Airport, Western Province

Overseeing the UXO clearance of a major development aid project located on a very heavily bombed airport. Required to:

  1. Ensure compliance with contractual deliverables by the clearance contractor.
  2. Provide technical resources to clients.
  3. Ensure quality of the finished product – ground cleared to or exceeding contractual parameters.
  4. Advise on technical and safety matters related to explosive ordance.
  5. Risk assessments.
  6. Deliver UXO awareness training.
  7. Coordinate UXO clearance activities.
  8. Liaise with the Engineer, the construction contractor and other parties such as the Japanese Embassy (regarding the discovery and repatriation of Japanese human remains).

Afghanistan

QA/QC Consultant - North Side Cantonment Area, Kabul International Airport

Managment of the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of a large landmine & UXO clearance project on the north side of Kabul airport. The project site was 30 hectares in size and located on a former Soviet militart base.  The work required:

  • The removal of scrap including fighting vehicles and aircraft.
  • The separation of UXO from scrap.
  • The classification of the UXO and assessment of its suitability for movement.
  • The excavation of bunkers and utilities as part of the UXO searchg process.
  • The clearance of knowm minefields.
  • Liaison with the USO Airforce Center For Environmental Excellence.
  • Liaison with NATO EOD teams to ensure the correct disposal of recovered UXO.
  • QA/QC checks to ensure contractual compliance.
  • Sign-off of cleared areas for hand over to the construction company.

Cambodia

Sunrise Orphanage UXO Clearance

Landmine & UXO search of the grounds of a designated orphanage.  No landmines were present but the area was inundated with UXO. The team was also required to drain a fishpond to ensure that all discarded UXO were removed and disposed of.
Operational Support to CMAC De-mining Unit Number 4 (DU4) CAMBODIA

Technical Assistance to Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC)

Provision of an emergency team of supervisors to Cambodia’s national landmine clearance organizatioin. Supervisors were required to:

  • Train Cambodian nationals in correct and safe clearance procedures

  • Organize logistics for the operation including the management of an emergency evacuation during a Khumer Rouge offensive.

Republic of China (Taiwan)

Contract No. TB88001W041PE - Clearance of Mine Dumps 1 to 5 and Two Minefields

This project involved the excavation of five further mine dumps in the same area as the company’s 1998 project. However, this project also involved the clearance of two large minefields in difficult terrain.

This project involved the excavation of single dump into which old landmines had been placed decades earlier. The project was extremely delicate due to the poor condition of the ordnance within the dump and the proximity of ground water and difficult conditions within the dump. The clearance team was required to:

  • Construct protective works in order to protect a nearby temple and village from possible blast and fragmentation.
  • Dismantle the walled and wired perimeter of the dump without disturbing the contents.
  • Carefully remove trees and other vegetation that had flourished within the dump.
  • Excavate the dump methodically and safely (similar to an archaeological dig) without disturbing the rotting landmines.
  • Assess the landmines to see if they could be moved.
  • Movement of the mines into disposal pits for controlled burn off.

Mozambique

Inhambane Proximity De-mining Programme

Four landmine & UXO clearance technical specialist were deployed to Mozambique’s Inhambane Province to train and supervise Mozambican national deminers in accordance with the United Nations International Mine Action Standards (IMAS).

Laos

Deployed a landmine & UXO clearance team in support of a German non-governmental organization (NGO). The NGO was providing aid to impoverished communities who had previously unreachable due to war. The task required the electronic search of road routes and the demolition of any landmines and UXO detected.
